Celestial Pearl Danio (Galaxy Rasbora) Courtship Behavior

Here's a great video of the highly prized Celestial Pearl Danio (previously called the Galaxy Rasbora) doing a courtship dance before spawning (although not yet proven, some have said this is a territorial display between males). These fish are highly endangered, so breeding them in your aquarium is important. Not much is known about their breeding behavior though, so this video is very helpful! If your Celestichthys margaritatus are swimming around each other like this, chances are you're doing something right and will see some fry shortly.

  1. Actually in he last issue of Tropical Fish hobbiest their is a really good article that contradicts the claim that this fish is endangered. Apparently the claims that the fish only occured in a single river were bogus. I'm taking it all with a grain of salt but thats the current scoop.

  2. Haven't seen the TFH article but Practical Fishkeeping has reported that other populations of the species were found by the Myanmar Department of Fisheries. The export of the species is now banned, so they clearly believe that it is under threat.

  3. I don't think it's 'Courtship Behavior'. I think it's ‘territorial display between males’.
I have Red Rasbora, and i saw it in my pound today.

You are probably right as others have commented that these are probably two male fish. However it is still a good sign that courtship is about to occur.

  5. Actually, in this particular case, I can discount the "two males" hypothesis, as when I shot this video for YouTube, I only had one male... A few days after I shot this video, the same behaviour between the same fish resulted in a successful spawning.

  6. I did see an article that the department of fisheries found more sites of Celestial Pearl Danio. I have not heard about the current status of harvesting them. I understand there was a moratorium earlier due to concerns over the species.

I am currently collecting aquariums in order to set up a breeding "fish room" for a few different species, one of which will be Celestial Pearl Danio. I know a 10 gal tank is recommended to raise them , that said , has anybody tried a nano set up, if so, comments?
